First Visit

First Visit

Reid Amborn, DMD smiling at the front desk of his orthodontic office in Salem, OR.The main goal of orthodontic treatment is to provide you with properly aligned teeth and jaws. This is important not just for a beautiful smile, but for the overall health of your mouth as well. The American Association of Orthodontics recommends that children be seen for an orthodontic evaluation by the age of 7. At Amborn Orthodontics, it is our goal to provide you with the best care possible. Here is what you can expect from the first visit.

The Goal of the First Visit

The goal of your first orthodontic visit is designed for you to get to know the orthodontic team, learn about the different treatments, and determine which treatments are best for your needs. We take our time so that we are able to get to know you, just as you are able to get to know us. Your appointment also gives you the opportunity to ask any questions that you may have.

Oral Exam

During your first visit, we will do a thorough exam of the inside of your mouth. This exam will allow us to see the alignment of your teeth and jaws, and whether or not they are falling into the correct pattern. During the exam, we also check for signs that might indicate cause for concern.

While it is recommended that your child has an orthodontic evaluation by the age of 7, it is important to know that they may not need treatment at this time. However, the evaluation gives us an opportunity to determine whether or not your child will need orthodontic treatment when they are older. Some of these issues can present themselves as early as the age of 2 or 3. If your child does need treatment at this point, it may be able to lessen the treatment required at later stages in life. In some cases, early treatment may even help your child avoid the need for later treatment altogether.

X-Rays and Imaging

X-rays and images are another important part of your first orthodontic visit. With these images, we are able to see everything happening below the gum line, including any developing teeth, the condition of your jawbone, and other potential issues. Not only do they provide us with a complete picture of your dental health, they can also be used to devise a treatment plan that will provide you with the most success.

Discussing Treatment Options

After we have taken a look at your mouth, and evaluated your images, we will then either let you know that there are no issues, or treatment may be recommended. Depending upon the developmental stage of the teeth and jaws, that treatment may be recommended right away, or it may be necessary to wait. We will discuss all of your treatment options, and what we believe will provide you with the best results. Periodic follow ups may be necessary to determine when the best time to start treatment would be.

Answering Your Questions

Whether you need treatment now, or it is recommended for later, your first visit is the time to ask any questions you might have and address your concerns. We can let you know how long treatment may take, learn more about the procedures recommended, and what they are likely to cost. With your questions answered, you can begin treatment with confidence.

While it is recommended that children be seen for an orthodontic evaluation by the age of 7, it's never too late to get a straighter, healthier smile. In fact, orthodontic treatment can be beneficial for patients of all ages. For more information, and to schedule your first orthodontic visit, call Amborn Orthodontics at (503) 967-9887 today.
